REAL COST OF HOMELESSNESS.
The only reason we don't know is because we dare not
ask the questions because we don't want the answers.
In the great place to live we call Fairfax county and
Northern virginia, one in five children live in poverty
and or lives on the brink of homelessness.
HOMELESSNESS HURTS EVERYBODY.
Homelessness hurts Families and not just the ones without a roof over their
heads. It hurts everyone while affecting our social fabric and costing the community
more than a planned approach to preventing that homelessness in the first place.
INCREASED PUBLIC BURDEN FOR HIGHER MEDICAL COSTS.
Hospital Bills are $2,414 more for people who are Homeless. This is because they
stay in the hospital for four days longer on average than people with a Home to go
home to to convalesce and recover. No 1 day in/out procedures followed by four days
bed rest at _______(home). This as per a New England Journal of Medicine study.
Homelessness makes children sick and go to the Emergency room more often than
children with a home to go home to.
Twice as many Hospitalizations!!
Twice as many ear infections !!
Four times as many asthma attacks!!!!
Five times more stoch problems !!!!!
Six times as many, as many speech problems !!!!!!
So, children would stay healthier if only they were home more.
INCREASED COSTS TO PUBLIC EDUCATION AND THE FUTURE.
Children are more likely to have lower academic achievements when without
a home.
Twice as likely to have learning disabilities.
Twice as likely to take the same grade twice,what with frequent absences.
Four times as likely to have developmental delays.
Preventing and Ending Homelessness needs to be coordinated with the School systems
and collaboration between the Schools and the others charged with helping us maintain
our basic rights against calamity and heartbreak. Federal Mandate by the McKinny-Vento
legislation has been divided into sectors for to to long. It's only by standing together that we
don't fall.
